The Bloomington area was near the edge of a large grove occupied by the Kickapoo People, a Native American Tribe, before the first settlers arrived from Europe in the early 1820s. Bloomington stayed a village for about 10 years until 1831 when McLean County was created. Bloomington did not have their own police department until the 1850s. Rolling around to the 1900s and they had a fire that was discovered too late so most of their downtown area had to be rebuilt. By 1961 they had built a city hall and by the ’70s their population was over 45,000.
